Subject-Object Awareness: A Reflective Exploration of Consciousness by Isaac Cherian, Psychologist

Reflective practice plays a pivotal role in achieving a deeper understanding of the relationship between the subject and object of awareness. This profound insight is of significant importance when viewed through the lens of a consciousness-based approach. Central to this understanding is the recognition of the duality inherent in any conscious experience: the subject and the objects. This reflective practice encourages individuals to recognize that they are the subject, the agent bringing meaning and comprehension to the objects within their awareness, transcending the ephemeral nature of these objects themselves (Consciousness-Based Approach, 2022).

The Reflective Practice Exercise: To foster a better understanding of the subject-object dynamic within experiential awareness, the following exercise guides participants from the tangible to the subtle aspects of awareness:

  1. Visual Object Awareness: Begin by selecting a visual object, like a book or an art piece. Direct your full attention to this object. Acknowledge that there is an observer, the subject (you), and the observed, the object (e.g., the book). Understand that your awareness plays an active role in giving meaning to the object.

  2. Sound Awareness: Shift your focus to auditory experiences. Pay attention to various sounds, such as birdsong, music, or traffic. Observe the duality: you, the subject, and the sounds, the objects of awareness. Realize that your awareness grants significance to the sounds.

  3. Body and Breath Awareness: Now, turn your attention inward. Become aware of your own body, its sensations, and your breath. Note the separation between the experiencer (you) and the experienced (your body and breath). Understand that your awareness is the bridge between the two.

  4. Thoughts and Emotions Awareness: Move further into the realm of mental experiences. Observe your thoughts and emotions. Recognize the clear division between the experiencer (yourself) and the experiences (your thoughts and emotions). Your awareness holds the key to understanding them.

  5. The Experiencer and the Object of Awareness: This step is the pinnacle of the exercise. Contemplate the idea that, throughout all previous phases, there has consistently been an experiencer (you) and the objects of awareness. Acknowledge the role of your awareness in shaping your understanding of the world.

Conclusion: Reflective practice is a powerful tool for deepening your comprehension of a consciousness-based approach and awareness. By recognizing the interplay between the subject and the objects of awareness in various facets of experience, you gain a heightened awareness of the profound role your consciousness plays in shaping your reality. The Consciousness-Based Approach serves as a guide to embrace the unity and duality inherent in conscious experience, helping you transcend the limitations of fleeting objects to become more than the sum of your observations. This exercise is a step toward a richer, more holistic understanding of your inner and outer world.
